Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident by providing property, liability and medical coverage.
* Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your auto.
* Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or
property damage.
* Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and
sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.
An auto policy may have many optional coverages, but the typical policy usually consists of six basic coverages only some of which are required by the state and some of which may be required by a lender if financed.
1. Bodily Injury Liability
This coverage applies to injuries you, the policyholder or designated driver cause to someone else. You or other listed family members on the policy are also covered when legally driving someone else's auto.
2. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) or Medical Payments
These coverages pay for the treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder's auto. PIP may cover medical expenses, lost wages and the cost of replacing services normally performed by someone injured in an auto accident.
3. Property Damage Liability
This coverage pays for damage you or someone legally driving your auto causes to someone else's property. Typically, this is damage to someone else's car, but it could be buildings, fences, or other type structures with which your car collides.
4. Collision
This coverage pays for damge to your car as a result of collision with another vehicle, pothole, other object or overturning. Typically sold with a deductible ranging from $100 to $1,000 with higher deductibles allowing for lower premiums. When at fault your policy will pay for your repairs minus the deductible. When not at fault your policy will pay for repairs minus the deductible then seek reimbursement (subrogation) against the other insurance carrier. If successful your deductible will be returned.

This coverage also known as Other Then Collision reimburses for loss due to theft, fire, flood, falling objects, explosion, earthquake, windstorm, hail, vandalism, riot or contact with dumb animals such as birds or deer. In short damage from other then collision with an object.
The most common comprehensive loss is for a cracked or broken windshield. As Florida law requires these to be repaired many companies waive the deductible for a front windshield.
6. Uninsured and Underinsured
Motorist Coverage
This coverage will reimburse you, a member of your family, or a legally designated driver if one of you is injured by an uninsured, underinsured, or hit and run driver.
Companies offer other optional coverages such as rental car reimbursement or towing and labor, gap coverage, first accident forgiveness or diminishing deductible. Check with your agent to verify what options are available with your specific carrier.
Many carriers also offer Personal Umbrella coverage which provides additional liabil-ity protection above the basic limits of your auto policy. These typically are in amounts of one or two milllion dollar increments or may be higher. Legal awards resulting from auto accident liability can be substantial and the additional protection often proves a wise decision.
